Cuckoo Heart (2009)

CUCKOO HEART is a satire, shot in English and Spanish, about the cultural clash in the South Florida's middle class suburbs where a Behavior Therapist gathers a group of potential patients, Americans and Hispanics, to undertake the task of trying to blend two different lifestyle streams and aggressions into one powerful new identity. Will South Florida's Anglo-Saxon Americans be eventually Latinized. Or, is it the other way around? Our characters are those profoundly influenced by both cultures, trying to bring together opposite views on everything that really matters to people in this new world: love, sex, tolerance, fun, survival, understanding and extermination. And, finally find out, if we are not that different after all but merely killing and mating machines.

CHARACTERS:

TRACY : [LISAGAYE TOMLINSON] Successful and hard working woman that postponed her personal life to career aspirations. Now, her biological clock urges her to mate but her personal standards have risen her options to perhaps unreachable heights. She is bossy, opinionated and a natural leader. Actor to play the role should be American and capable of delivering her lines in Spanish, clear and understandable, regardless of strong accent or actual knowledge of the language.

BERNARD: [BENEDICT IVES] Mental Health Therapist deeply involved in the research of cultural integration in South Florida, who claims to have created a program that helps people from different origins to blend their opposite points of views and upbringings into a new and tightly united new society.

SANDRA: [ADRIANA OLIVEROS] Beautiful woman, also a Mental Therapist, struggling with her natural process of aging which she refuses to accept. Rebounding from a failed relationship, she is tirelessly looking for a new start, which she finds assisting an innovative therapist in search of cultural integration among his patients. She is the only character in the film that does not speak English at all.

LOIS: [CYNTHIA ENRIQUEZ] Soft spoken, naive, hippie looking young woman that spent the last 10 years in missions inside third world countries and now she desperately seeks adventure to make up for unused leisure times and strong intimate basic emotions. Like everyone else, she craves for what she did not have at due time. Actor to play the role, can be of any ethnicity, but English should be her native tongue and she is allowed to deliver Spanish with difficulty.

PASTOR CARLOS: [LEONARDO KRYS] Charismatic religious spokes person. Preaches the good word with dual morality and mostly thinking about his own interests. He adapts and reinvents his positions to accommodate his well being. Actor to play the role should be Hispanic with acceptable knowledge of English. Ideally with strong accent and little speechcraft.

TONI: [DEBORAH FUNES] Online Adult entertainment entrepreneur. All business at most times but kind of timid and apprehensive when confronted with human relationships. Lonely and melancholic. Street wise philosopher but intensively romantic.

KARINA: [COLES BREWER] Rich Party girl. Wild and unruly. Happy and exciting. One of the few last pure Americans that grew up in the most latino of all neighborhoods in South Florida. Always felt a pariah in her own territory. Sometimes shallow, sometimes deep, she is the typical product of clashing cultures. Actor to play the role, should be American by birth and breeding, ideally of Anglo-Saxon or European roots or at least, with those looks. English should be her native language and should handle Spanish proficiently. It is fine if she has an accent in Spanish.

MARTIN: [DAVID HAYES] Local tycoon of doubtful reputation. Shady business and deals have landed him a fortune that he throws away with extravagance in pursuit of beautiful women.

CLAUDIA: [KAREN ROSS] Passionate retired stage actress that refused to accept older roles and withdrew from show business to enjoy life as a wealthy housewife. Abandoned by her husband for a younger starlet, she looks for a sexual payback or an explanation for her emotional loss.

TITO: [RENE FORNARIS] White collar worker. Jealous and possessive, susceptible and depressive. Aggressive broken hearted man victim of loss and betrayal. Desperately seeking for love.

BILL: [JERONIMO HIRSCHFELD] Recently retired Sports superstar. Well known all over town but extremely susceptible to praise and recognition in this stage of fading celebrity. He has become an Americanized Latino, for he loves this country and outbursts his gratitude at all times. Actor to play the role, should be Hispanic with proficient knowledge of both English and Spanish, languages that he will use comfortably.

JERRY : [GREG SCHROEDER] Sleazy and manipulative talent agent, grieving from a broken relationship but with high self preservation instincts. Perhaps would pay the highest price for a true friendship but rarely allows himself to get too close to people who he always tends to see as possible business elements. Actor to play the role should be American and English speaking. He has basic knowledge of Spanish that prevents him to convey in deep conversations.

EDDY: [JUSTIN IRWIN] Wannabe music star always involved in problematic stints. He has some talent but lacks patience. He believes that only scandals would rocket him to stardom. Always pushing to go against society and anything pre-established by moral or standards.

LUCY: [BELAXIS BUIL] TV host and radio personality in a hybrid station. Sultry and passionate girl always looking for a good time and easy living. Light spirited heartbreaker with open arms to friendship and tolerance.
